Every working mom knows that mornings can be a whirlwind. Between getting the kids ready, making breakfast, and gearing up for a packed day, it often feels like a race against time. I used to dread mornings, feeling rushed and overwhelmed. Over time, I developed a routine that helps me start each day with more ease. Here are my top five tips for simplifying your morning routine so you can tackle your day like a pro.
1. Prep the Night Before
One of the most effective ways I've streamlined my mornings is by prepping the night before. I take about 15-20 minutes each evening to lay out clothes for both myself and my kids. This practice saves us from frantic searches for matching socks or wardrobe meltdowns. In fact, studies show that planning ahead can reduce morning stress levels by 30%.
I also make sure that my lunch is ready to go, water bottles are washed, phones are charged, and I've set everything out that I need to remember to grab before heading off to work. Some nights I'm just too tired to take this step, and I always regret it in the morning. I'm doing a bit more at night so my morning self will thank me.
2. Rise Early for a Quick Workout
I know as a working mom, it's VERY hard to get up a bit early to fit in a workout. By the time I get home from work, make dinner, help kids with homework and do evening chores, I'm totally exhausted. Then I wake up in the morning when it's dark and my bed is oh so cozy - ugh! I don't want to get up. BUT...I feel so much better when I do workout.
I try for a 20-25 minute workout. I've currently been loving the FitOn App. It's free and has so many different workouts to choose from. My favorite thing to do is join one of their scheduled workouts at the same time each day (6:00am) and that takes the decision making out of it for me and I get varied workouts every day.
This early movement energizes me and sets a positive tone for the day. Research suggests that even just 10 minutes of exercise can boost mood and improve focus. Whether you can squeeze in five minutes of stretching or a quick bodyweight circuit, every bit counts.
3. Simplify Breakfast
This is so important, especially if you are getting an early morning workout. You want to continue with good choices by having a healthy breakfast. However, breakfast can consume more time than we realize. I've found that keeping it simple is key. Usually, I just scramble and egg and grab a piece of toast to head out the door. Some of my other favorites are overnight oats or a quick banana and berry smoothie. I always make sure to eat something before I drink coffee when I get to work.
For kids, it's a different story. Sometimes they will eat an egg with me and other days, they just want a bowl of cereal. I know this isn't the healthiest choice, but it works and it's quick. I remind myself often that I'm doing the best that I can and I'll make them a healthy dinner tonight.
4. Minimize Getting Ready
Being a professional who works, it's important for me to prepare for the day and present myself well. Although I would prefer to spend more time getting ready, I prioritize my workout and a bit of extra sleep, which is why I have streamlined my morning routine.
In my wardrobe, I have basic, essential pieces that do not require ironing. I usually select my outfit the night before based on my schedule for the following day.
My skincare routine has been simplified to a quick face wash, followed by a light serum, moisturizer, and tinted sunscreen. I then focus on my brows, apply mascara, a touch of blush, and of course, undereye concealer to combat the effects of being a tired mom!
5. Embrace Flexibility and Forgiveness
Despite efforts to maintain a smooth routine, mornings will occasionally go off course. Sometimes I have to take a deep breath and remember that everyone is trying their best. I really hate when I get snippy with my kids, so I remind myself that I will be at work all day I'll miss them. Give them an extra squeeze. It's always worth it.
It's perfectly okay not to have everything perfect every day. Allowing myself to be flexible has changed the way I view challenges. Instead of seeing setbacks as failures, I now view them as opportunities to adapt and find creative solutions (which I'll continue to share with you all).
Calmer Mornings Ahead
Navigating mornings as a working mama can be tricky, but these five simple tips have helped me streamline my routine and reclaim some peace as the day begins.
To recap: prepare the night before, wake up a bit earlier for a quick workout, simplify breakfast, minimize getting yourself ready, and embrace flexibility.
Every small change adds up, and I hope these tips help you create a morning routine that suits your busy lifestyle. Find what works best for you and your family, and watch how it transforms your chaotic mornings into calmer ones. Here's to smoother mornings ahead!
